Google AI Overview and Its Backlash
Google introduced AI Overviews to enhance search by summarizing relevant content using its advanced Gemini AI model. These summaries often appear at the top of search results, replacing traditional web links.
But many of us have noticed issues. The summaries can be factually incorrect, they often push real clickable sources below the fold, and they make the clean, classic “ten blue links” harder to access. Because of this, a growing number of users—including us—have been searching for ways to disable or bypass Google AI Overviews.

Can You Disable Google AI Search Results?
Let’s be clear: there is currently no permanent, official setting to fully disable AI Overviews.
Even if we opt out via Google’s experimental Search Labs, AI summaries still appear based on region, search type, or Google’s testing group. This means the AI layer is always partially active.
From our experience, the only reliable way to consistently remove AI Overviews is by using a browser extension designed to block them from view.
We’ll share that option below—along with other effective workarounds.
Why Is Google Showing AI Answers?
Google is showing AI-generated responses to deliver faster, more comprehensive answers. According to the company, these summaries aim to improve efficiency and reduce the need to click through multiple pages.
But despite Google’s intentions, we’ve seen firsthand how these responses can be:
- Inaccurate or overly simplified
- Lacking source transparency
- Harmful to original content creators and websites
As of May 2025, Google continues to test AI Overviews in select markets like the US and UK—even for users who’ve opted out. We believe this is part of their broader strategy to compete with emerging AI-powered search tools.
Four Methods to Remove or Bypass Google AI Overviews
While there’s no full “off” switch for AI Overviews, we’ve found four highly effective ways to filter, avoid, or remove them from your search experience:
1. Turn Off “AI Overviews and More” in Search Labs
If you’re part of Search Labs, you can opt out of AI Overviews directly:
Visit: labs.google.com/search/experiment/1. Sign in to your Google account. Locate “AI Overviews and more”. Toggle it off
We suggest trying this first, though it’s only available to users included in the Labs program. Even then, it doesn’t fully stop all AI answers.
2. Use a Direct Link with the UDM=14 Modifier
One of the easiest ways we’ve found to avoid AI summaries is using a modified search URL. Adding &udm=14 to your Google query forces traditional web results.
Try this link: https://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14
We recommend setting this as your default search engine:
On desktop (Chrome): Go to Settings > Search engine > Manage search engines. Add a custom engine using the above URL. Set it as “Default”.
On Android: Open Chrome > Settings > Search Engine.
iOS: Since Chrome doesn’t support custom engines, we suggest using Firefox or saving the link as a bookmark. Learn how to change default search engine in Firefox.
3. Use the “Web” Filter in Search Results
Google has added a “Web” tab to help users see only classic blue link results—something we find particularly useful.
To use it:
- Search anything on Google
- Click or tap the “Web” tab above the results
- If it’s hidden, open the three-dot menu to find additional options
We often use this filter manually, but you can also simulate it by bookmarking a search URL with &udm=14.
4. Install the “Hide Google AI Overviews” Browser Extension
If you’re on a desktop and want a set-it-and-forget-it solution, we recommend using the Hide Google AI Overviews extension.
Here’s how to install it:
- Go to the Chrome Web Store page
- Click Add to Chrome
- Confirm by selecting Add extension and type ‘Hide Google AI Overviews‘ or visit this link to download the extensions.
This tool works well across Chrome, Edge, Brave, and other Chromium browsers. In our experience, it removes AI Overviews from all search pages without additional input.
Important: While we’ve had no issues, this is a third-party extension. Always review permissions before installation.
Conclusion: Remove AI Results Google
While Google doesn’t currently allow users to fully disable AI Overviews, there are ways we can bypass, hide, or filter them we mentioned in above blog post.
We recommend trying multiple methods to find the best setup for your workflow. Until Google provides a global toggle, these options remain the most effective ways to restore the classic Google Search experience.
